Workfare Income Supplement could be refined further

Posted in News on April 27th, 2008 by Justin Ng

SINGAPORE: There is scope to refine and enhance the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS), said NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say.

But the bigger challenge, he added, is to continue educating workers and employers so that more workers will become CPF members and benefit from WIS.

The WIS is one of the most important policy initiatives that Singapore has introduced for workers in recent years because it gives an opportunity for low-wage workers to come onboard the CPF social safety net and benefit from it.

Civil servants to get two-month bonus in December

Posted in News on November 28th, 2007 by Justin Ng

SINGAPORE : Next month, the Government will pay civil servants a year-end Annual Variable Component (AVC) of one month on top of the 13th month bonus.

In addition, eligible civil servants will be paid a new performance-based Growth Bonus next March. Payable in times of exceptional economic performance, this bonus varies in amount depending on individual performance and aims to strengthen the link between performance and pay.

Good performers will receive 0.5 month of Growth Bonus, and better performers will receive more - up to 0.8 month.

In a statement, the Public Service Division said the economy has performed better than anticipated this year.

The Trade and Industry Ministry has forecast that the Singapore economy is expected to grow by 7.5 to 8 percent this year.

The unemployment rate has fallen from 2.7 percent last year to 1.7 percent, with a record high of 171,500 jobs created in the first 9 months of 2007.

In July this year, the government paid civil servants a mid-year AVC of 0.5 month and a one-off payment of S$220, in line with the call by the National Wages Council for employers to help low wage workers.

The total variable payment for 2007 is 2.5 months + S$220, not including the Growth Bonus.

With the Growth Bonus, the total payments for a good performer will be 3 months + S$220 for 2007, compared to 2.7 months + S$220 in 2006. - CNA/ch

This post outlines my top 8 reasons why someone who has a keen eye for talents, IT savvy, highly self-motivated and optimistic, resourceful and aggressive should try their hand at becoming a recruitment consultant. If you are already a recruitment consultant, then this post might help you remember the positive aspects of the job.

8. Strike a topic with anyone and make new friends easily
When someone asked you what do you do for a living and you reply with “I’m a recruitment consultant”. Questions will start pouring in and you can give professional advice to them. You can also share your encounters and memorable incidents with them.

7. You can work from office or even home
If you have no interviews for the day or you’re under maternity leave, you can work from home. I have seen top consultants bringing in sales from home and they don’t have to wear a suit everyday but sometimes, you need to dress to impress.

6. You don’t really need a degree
I hope this will not stir up some serious debates here. But it is proven that you don’t need a diploma or degree to get a job as a recruitment consultant and earn more than $5000 per month, unless you are involved in research or very technical work, or the company requires you to have a degree or master due to branding reason.

5. New challenges everyday
Everyday is a new day for recruitment consultants. This is definitely not a dull job as you get to meet new people and overcome new challenges everyday.

4. It’s not an easy job and people respect that
Every successful placements come with a story behind it because we’re dealing with human beings. You will come across candidates who stood you up, never report for work on day one, candidates who rejected your client’s offer and those who resigned after a few days of work. Most of your clients engaged more than one job recruitment agency and so, you have to be better and faster than your competitors.

3. Your clientele grows naturally and you may have a client for life
When you first started off as a junior consultant, you have a point to prove and so, you will need your clients more than they need you. After you have established your credibility, you will realize that your clients keep coming back to you and your clientele grows naturally when the contact person moved to another company. It’s also a job where you don’t have to prospect everyday.

2. Job satisfaction
Of course, you help to improve the quality of life of your candidates, they will be thankful to you. Your clients appreciate when you recommended and placed a talent with them successfully.

1. It’s a job for life
There are definitely no immediate danger of jobs running out, agree? As long as there are job opportunities everyday and companies continue to hire, you will be safe. A successful recruitment consultant is well sought after and enjoys a very high employability rate.
